Andrew Mackey has navigated a unique and challenging academic and professional journey. Working full-time to support himself during his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, he temporarily set aside his academic pursuits to provide for his family. After over a decade, he resumed his education, returning with refined intellectual curiosity and enriched life experience.
Mackey's professional career spans multiple roles and sectors. As a Communications Specialist at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies at Ohio State University since 2022, he contributes to the center's outreach and public relations. His previous roles include leadership positions at the Catholic Conference of Ohio and the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, where he oversaw digital media evangelization. His career in public service began at the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education as the Communications & Digital Coordinator.
Political engagement is a significant facet of Mackey's journey. He ran as a candidate for Ohio's 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. His campaign work garnered attention from Fox News, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Columbus Dispatch, and Vice News. At the age of 18, he voted for himself as the Democratic Candidate for the 2nd District Ohio House of Representatives. His commitment to public service further manifested in roles with the Union County Young Democrats, the Brewer for Ohio House campaign, and the College Democrats at Ohio State University.
As a volunteer, Mackey has contributed to initiatives such as the Ignatian Young Adult Ministries' Contemplative Leaders in Action and the Diocesan Synod on Synodality Committee for the Diocese of Columbus. He's also devoted time to coaching the Fairbanks High School's Mock Trial team.
In 2016, Mackey was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson's Disease. Despite the challenges this has presented, his commitment to his work, education, and public service remains unfaltering. He continues to maintain affiliations with several esteemed organizations such as the American Historical Association, the American Political Science Association, the Public Relations Society of America, the National Communication Association, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, and The Ohio State University Alumni Association.
Andrew resides near Columbus, Ohio, with his wife and their rescued birds.
